Top Apps for the Sleep-Deprived New Parent

Not Smart Enough for College (1)

My wife and I both value our sleep, and neither one of us are night owls, so when our first son was born, we both agreed to share night duties as far as diaper changes, feedings, and wake-ups go. We survived, but now that our second son is here, I was once again reminded just how little sleep new parents get. Just last month I tried to set a timer to wake up for a feeding on my phone using the TV remote, and don’t get me started on the number of times I’ve gotten into a little hot water with my wife when I free poured a 3:00 AM bottle as opposed to measuring down to the exact ounce. As a parent, I can answer for us all when I say, “We’re tired!”

If you find yourself struggling to find time for a long yearned-for nap, or perhaps you’re drinking directly from the bottle (the baby bottle, that is!), you might be a new parent. Having an infant is one of the greatest experiences in the world, but it can be overwhelming. One minute you're going about your life, the next thing you know you're zoning out to an episode of Sesame Street, half-asleep. Yes, these days are hard, but they're worth it!

The good news is, thanks to modern innovations and your handy-dandy smartphone, you'll have the necessary tools and information within arm's reach. Be forewarned, if your current phone is outdated, you might struggle to run the more dynamic apps. Look for deals to help you invest in a new device to ensure you enjoy the many benefits newer, feature-rich phones provide (not to mention the fun of photo and video capabilities). Let’s face it. A good camera is a necessity when you have children, not to mention plenty of storage to hold all of those photographs.

Let's take a look at some of the best apps that will help you adjust to life as a new parent.

Apps for when you feel like you have no clue what you're doing

No matter how many classes you take or how many books you read, you can never know everything about raising a baby. Beyond Blue explains that being a new parent is a lot of on-the-job training. You'll find yourself questioning "Is that cough normal?" "Should it look like that?" and "Why won't my baby stop crying?" Take heart, as these questions are normal for all new parents. Thankfully, there are some apps that will help you figure it all out.

What to Expect

The What to Expect app comes from the same people that brought you the book, and the app is just as valuable as its paperback predecessor. There is a version available for both Apple and Android, making it convenient for all parents, and What to Expect provides insight into every stage of pregnancy as well as information about your child's milestones. Another great feature – the app connects you to an active community of moms who have the same questions as you do!

Peanut

Want to show off your little peanut? Need advice from moms who’ve been through the same things you are? Or maybe you just need someone who can appreciate what you're going through. Peanut connects you with moms nearby and allows you to interact with people who know what it’s like to be covered in drool.

Apps that help you stay organized

Having a new baby can be chaotic, and as Petit explains, a solid routine is a must for your little one, right from the start. Not only will it help you feel like you have a handle on things, but it will also help your baby feel at ease. Keeping on top of when your baby ate, naps, and when you last changed a diaper can be challenging. Thankfully, gone are the days scribbling a note and hoping you can remember where you put it because now there's an app for that.

Baby Connect

Baby Connect is a great app that allows you to track all of your baby's activities. From eating and diapers, and even your child's measurements, Baby Connect has it all in one place. What's great about this app is that all the information is shareable. Want to make sure your daycare provider stays on the same schedule, simply make them an authorized user.

Baby Feed Timer

If you're breastfeeding, sometimes it can be hard to know whether your baby ate enough. Sometimes, it just comes down to keep track of how much time they spent feeding. Baby Feed Timer allows you to time each feeding and notes whether the baby ate on the left or the right. Because, let's be honest, at two in the morning, we're not going to remember which side they nursed last. And what’s more, the app tracks trends, so you can easily see when something might be off.

Becoming a new parent is hard, but there are tools to make it easier. Don't feel like you have to do it on your own. Look around, try new apps, and find what works best for you and your family.
