Finding Eddie’s Dimples
Eddie is my grandson who has a passion for writing, and recently he started writing children’s books. As I thought about him an idea for a post involving Eddie in a quest to get dimples started to evolve. So this post is about Eddie’s journey to get dimples.
Obviously, this post describes my grandson’s struggles to improve his smile by adding dimples. Of course his rationalization is to attract girls.
Eddie is a very sociable and creative person so his imagination would be stretched to solve this dilemma. I tried thinking like Eddie and I came up with some imaginative ideas to benefit his efforts to get dimples. First, he might want to hire a tattoo artist to create permanent dimples on his cheeks. Second, he could make special glue that would allow him to keep dimples plastered on his face. Third, and most obvious, would be plastic surgery. Each scenario could be filled with adventure, fun, and creative mayhem.
The story would end with Eddie failing in his quest because his motive was superficial. He would come to understand that enhancement of his handsomeness was not what attracted girls. He would learn that the girls would accept him without dimples. In the end, Eddie’s story would be about reaching success by failing forward.
Ed Catmull, president of Pixar Animation and Disney Animation Studios recently said “Trying and failing is also a key to success and creativity, but many are scared to fail1.”
The message of this post is simple. Parents should help their children become more resilient by encouraging creative risk taking, by helping them step out of their comfort zone and try new things. Help them understand that sometimes the best learning comes after we fail IF we don’t let that failure stop us. The key is to keep trying and NEVER, NEVER, give up. Let’s teach our children about failing forward.
