What’s Your Child’s Homework Style?

Not Smart Enough for College (67)

One of the first things we plan to do in Conquering Homework is help you get really clear on your personalized path to success. A key first step to helping your child change the way they do homework is understanding their unique homework style.

Research shows that most students who struggle with homework fall into one of six basic styles or some combination.

Do any of these sound like your child?

My child:

  1. Is Disorganized
  2. Rushes through their homework
  3. Procrastinates
  4. Goes to great lengths to Avoid doing any homework
  5. Is Inattentive
  6. Is Easily Frustrated

If one or more of these sounds familiar, read on for a closer look.

DISORGANIZED

  1. Cluttered backpack / messy binders / papers shoved in every which way
  2. Trouble staying on top of assignments / turns work in late or not at all
  3. Can’t find needed supplies, like paper, pencils, books, instructions, etc.
  4. Tries to do long term assignments at the last minute
  5. Forgets to turn in the work they do get done

RUSHED

  1. Does homework quickly but pays little attention to detail or makes careless mistakes
  2. Seems capable of higher quality work but only motivated to just get by
  3. Rarely shows their work or goes back to check or revise it
  4. Works so fast that their handwriting is messy or barely legible
  5. Hurries through most things they don’t enjoy, such as chores, grooming, practicing, etc.

PROCRASTINATES

  1. Makes excuses for why they don’t start, do, or finish their homework
  2. Thinks it will take way less time to do their work than is realistic
  3. Doesn’t do homework until late in the evening or even the morning it’s due
  4. Claims they work better under pressure
  5. Often runs out of time and doesn’t finish

AVOIDS - while procrastinators put off homework, avoiders try not to do it at all

  1. Frequently claims to have no homework
  2. Says they already finished any homework they had
  3. Doesn’t write down assignments
  4. Doesn’t bring home instructions, books, or other materials needed to do homework
  5. Teachers confirm they have homework that’s consistently not being done or turned in

INATTENTIVE

  1. Easily distracted by just about anything other than homework
  2. Takes way longer to finish homework than seems necessary
  3. Needs to be redirected often to get work done
  4. Doesn’t like to be nagged, but seems unable to stay focused on their own
  5. Resents or resists efforts to help them focus

EASILY FRUSTRATED

  1. Ends up in tears or tantrums over homework
  2. Shuts down when homework gets even a little bit hard
  3. Often complains that their homework is too hard or too much
  4. Struggles to bounce back when things don’t turn out the way they wanted
  5. Gets so emotional they can’t do their work

“But,” you may be saying, “how does it help me to know my child’s homework style?”

“I just want to know what to DO about it and how to get them to get their homework done!”

And that’s exactly why it’s so important to know and understand their style. There is no sense wasting your time teaching organization to a child who doesn’t have trouble with organization, or emotional regulation to one who remains cool and calm under pressure.

In Conquering Homework you will have individualized attention from us and we will work with you to create a solid step by step plan to change the way your child gets their homework done. Of course, there are some general guidelines that help all families, but each family is unique and deserves their own unique and highly effective plan.

We look forward to working with you in the Conquering Homework community and celebrating with you as your child learns to get their homework done and enjoy more resilient wins at home and school and beyond.
