To Infinity… and Beyond

Not Smart Enough for College (68)

If we’ve learned anything over all the years we’ve worked with parents and families, it’s that we don’t make progress by just looking at what’s wrong, we’ve got to focus on what’s great as well and work from our strengths.

Have you ever heard the old story about the Animal School, first written by George Reavis, Assistant Superintendent of the Cincinnati Public Schools in the 1940s?

The animals decided to start a school for all their children and adopted a standardized curriculum including swimming, running, flying, and climbing. All the kids were expected to take all the subjects and were graded using standardized achievement tests.

The ducks, of course, were excellent swimmers, but made only passing grades in flying and were terrible runners. They were promptly put into a remedial program and had to drop out of swimming to practice running. Their webbed feet got so sore they could hardly swim anymore.

The rabbits were at the top of the running class, but very bad at swimming and complete failures at flying. Also, they were full of energy and hopped around all over the place, so they were always in trouble for causing a disturbance.

The squirrels started out great. They were good at climbing and running and pretty good at flying too if they climbed to the top of a tree, spread their paws, and glided to the ground, but this wasn’t the approved method taught in flying class. Their teacher had them practice so hard flapping their paws to learn to take off from the ground that they were exhausted and had hardly any energy left to run or climb.

The eagles got to the top of the climbing tree first, but were disqualified because they did it by flying. They thought this was unfair and insisted that reaching the goal was more important than the way they got there. They were pretty defiant and refused to back down, so they were labeled trouble makers.

What are your child’s super powers? Some kids have wonderful strengths that help them succeed easily in our schools today, others have strengths that are not as immediately valued or recognized that may nevertheless lead them to great success in life and even in school when given guidance on how to use them.

We invite you to join us in the exciting adventure of building a community of parents who support and inspire each other along the way. Together we can help each other discover our kids’ unique strengths and help them find their way to get that homework done and enjoy more resilient wins at home and school.

We’ve watched families struggle with frustration and disappointment, seen stress over schoolwork drain their joy and damage their relationships.

We’ve also seen families turn the tide, see their kids do better in school, and build stronger family connections in the process.

Conquering Homework is not going to be like anything you’ve ever tried or even heard about. Of course, we’ll cover practical ideas like planners and schedules, but most important, we will work with you to teach your kids HOW to use the tools and strategies they need for lasting success.
