I thought

Not Smart Enough for College (89)

I thought it was a big glass of cold milk.

My favorite drink. And I was thirsty. And hungry. And tired.

It wasn’t mine, but I knew there was plenty more in the fridge so…

I took a big gulp.

Yuck!

NOT milk.

Buttermilk.

My dad’s favorite.

Now I love buttermilk pancakes, buttermilk biscuits, even buttermilk fried green tomatoes, but a big swig of plain buttermilk?

Not what I was expecting and very hard to swallow.

Turns out that expectations rule when it comes to our enjoyment of pretty much everything, from a cold, refreshing drink to our biggest holiday dreams.

Schools are closing their doors, last minute gifts are on their way… or not.

It’s time to check in on our holiday expectations.

Are you hoping it will be magical? That everyone will get along? Be on their best behavior? Share your dreams?

Here’s another idea.

Decide that whatever happens is going to be perfect.

Decide that carefree, joyful moments and hard, messy ones can all have a perfect place in the story of your family.

Kids thrive best when they know they come from a family of imperfect people who can figure things out, overcome and learn from challenges, and look back with affection, wisdom, and a little humor on all the moments along the way.

Happy Imperfectly Perfect Holidays,

Anne
