Spittin’ Seeds
Everyday traditions.
Those little rituals we repeat over and over again that become treasured memories and tie us to each other’s hearts.
When I was growing up, we lived near the beach in Southern California. Although that was many years ago, I still love to hear the sound of ocean waves crashing on the shore.
One of the little traditions I loved was going as a family down to the beach with a watermelon. We’d cut it open, pass out the big triangles, then let the juice run down our face and arms. We’d line up in the sand and see who could spit their seeds the farthest out to sea. I don’t suppose there was a very accurate measurement, but it didn’t matter. We were always excited when someone got off a great shot.
An important rite of passage was mastering the skill of eating your whole slice without dropping it into the sand. Oh, the bitter disappointment of losing your grip and watching your precious slice fall into the salty grit. There was just no going back once it landed!
The little rituals. What are yours? Is it time for some new ones?
Happy Failing Forward,
Anne
