Midsummer

Years ago my father flew to Stockholm for a business meeting. He was a bit on edge because it was important to his fledgling business that the people he was meeting with came away with a good impression.

First of all, bear in mind that Stockholm is a long way from our home in Salt Lake City, Utah, so the trip started with many hours of all the delights of air travel. Eventually he checked into his hotel and, aware of how tired he was, he asked the receptionist to please arrange an early morning wakeup call.

In his dark, quiet room, Dad quickly fell into a deep slumber. At some point, he rolled over and groggily pulled aside the room’s heavy drapes. Immediately the room was flooded with the full light of day and he jolted wide awake.

“Oh no! I overslept and am hopelessly late!”

He threw on his clothes, raced down the stairs and out into the plaza. Crowds of people milled about, enjoying the sunshine, as he frantically looked for a taxi.

That was when he discovered that it was 3am.

Why would anyone waste a single minute of sunshine sleeping at Midsummer in Stockholm? It is time to revel in the light, a counterpoint to the long dark days of winter in the far north.

Needless to say, he had a good laugh at himself and made it to his meeting with plenty of time to spare.

I don’t live anywhere near that far north, but summer at my home is still a time of long sunny days perfect for getting outside with our kids and reveling in the sunshine. How about where you live?

I’m going to put that on the schedule this week. How about you?

Here’s to more resilient wins all summer long,

Anne
