The Smile That Captured My Heart

At church this morning, the children put on their annual program. It consisted of a children’s chorus and a small speaking part for each child.

Vivienne, a recently adopted little Chinese girl, was sitting on the front row. She is four years old, does not speak much English, and is trying to adjust to a new culture and way of life.

I watched her closely and I noticed that her smile was contagious. I could not help focusing on this little girl as she stood there singing and smiling to the congregation. Occasionally she moved her arms as though she were leading the music. I was sitting close enough I could hear her words which were part English and part I don’t know what. But it didn’t matter because she was enjoying herself singing and smiling.

Every now and then I could hear sing a simple English word that I knew she learned in her home. Words such as “family, love, and me” were sung with enthusiasm and gusto. Several times she turned around to look and smile at her older brother and two older sisters. They smiled back, letting her know that they loved her and were proud of her.

smileI not only saw the enjoyment in Vivienne’s eyes but I also felt her love for her family. But for me the most important thing I felt was a special spirit emanating from this precious, beautiful, innocent, little girl. The sweet little spirit of this girl touched the hearts of many in the congregation.

I learned several things from watching Vivienne that I believe all parents could use to help them raise their children. 1) Building self-confidence by encouraging their child to try; 2) Making the home a place for learning and love; and 3) Recognizing their child’s challenges and be patient and supportive as they work to conquer them. Remembering that as they do so they become stronger and more competent in controlling their own destiny.

I am closely watching and enjoying Vivienne’s progression and I am appreciating her example.
