Thinking It Through
The sky was just beginning to lighten. In the pre-dawn quiet, we watched storm clouds gathering far down the valley, miles away. We had plenty of time to stick with our plan, hike to the top of the ridge, and watch the sun rise.
We were making good progress up the hillside, and the morning was glorious. A gentle breeze rippled through the grass and wildflowers. The air was crisp and alive with the scent of a thousand blooms. We talked about how clean the air had been all spring, one of the silver linings of stay home, stay safe.
The route got a little steeper here, and we huffed and puffed in quiet companionship as we made our way ever higher. But, wait, was that a rumble? No, never mind, I don’t think it was. Oh, there’s a flash, yes, that’s lightning, and there’s the thunder; we need to get down off this exposed ridgeline. Right now!
Heeding the warning signs of nature, we changed direction and quickly scrambled to a safer, more prudent path.
As we watched the storm blow quickly towards us, I couldn’t help but think that as a country we would do well to heed the growing rumbles of injustice and flashes of pain urging us to change direction and strike out on a new path of greater safety for all.
Here's to Failing Forward Together,
