The Trees are Moving

A few days ago I watched a short video on my Facebook page. I am not certain if it is true or fictionalized to teach a valuable lesson. Either way the lesson it teaches is important for us to learn, apply, and teach to our children.

The story is about a father and his adult 24 year-old son who are traveling home by train after visiting the doctor. The son is fascinated watching the scenery speed by and offers a simple, running commentary about what he is seeing. “Dad, look the trees are moving behind us,” he says. His dad smiles but doesn’t say anything to his son. However, there is a young couple sitting close by who are annoyed at the childish behavior of this young man.

The young man is filled with excitement as he continues pointing out the many wonders most of us take for granted. When he sees the clouds he says, “Look Dad, the clouds are running with us!” Again his father just smiles.

The conversation between this young man and his father convinces the young couple that they should offer this father some encouragement and advice. So trying to be helpful they say, “Sir, why don’t you take your son to a good doctor?”

This kind father looks at them and smiles before responding, “I did and we are just coming from the hospital, my son was blind from birth, he just got his eyes today.…”

The last statement on this particular video is, “Every single person on the planet has a story. Don’t judge people before you truly know them. The truth might surprise you….”

We need to be careful about labeling people and should teach our children understanding and acceptance of others no matter how different they may be. These skills combined with kindness and patience will pay dividends throughout our entire lives.
